INEC set for Cross River senatorial bye-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission says it is prepared for the Cross River Northern Senatorial District bye-election.

The state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Emmanuel Hart, made this known at INEC’s headquarters in Calabar on Monday during a meeting with the chairmen of eleven political parties in the state.

According to him, “We have begun sensitisation through the dissemination of information to the grassroots in the local languages they understand. We have started assembling nonsensitive materials, smart card readers, and getting the voters’ register ready.

“We crave the indulgence of the party chairmen to educate their members to do the right thing during the election. The electorate should be law-abiding. They should always do the right thing and avoid electoral vices such as ballot box snatching, vote-buying, among others because there are penalties. They should cast their votes peacefully and go home.”

He said everything is in place to conduct the election amid the Covid-19 pandemic, noting that the electoral umpire would strictly adhere to the protocols set by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
