Ebonyi State Government is set to roll out palliatives to residents as all modalities have been put in place for a smooth distribution.
The Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly and Chairman of the State’s Fundraising and Welfare Committee, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru stated this in Abakaliki, the State Capital.
He spoke during a live broadcast on the state broadcast stations on Sunday.
Mr Nwifuru said a lot of work have been going underground to support the people of Ebonyi with palliative measures during these tough times occasioned by the Coronavirus pandemic.
“Those palliatives and sketches on modalities for its distribution are ready”, he said.
He noted that the state Governor, David Umahi has made provisions for food items and condiments that will reach everyone in the State.
According to him, atleast 200 persons per polling unit across the 1785 polling units in the State will get the palliatives.
“The Governor has done almost everything. He has directed that all workers (Federal, State and Local Government) be accommodated. When we roll out these palliatives, I am sure it will get to everyone in Ebonyi State, be you the rich, stakeholder, worker and poorest of the poor.
Mr Nwifuru further said the materials will move straight from the State to the polling units/villages.
While noting that the distribution will be clearly non-partisan, he said that a polling unit committee has been formed, consisting of one PDP nominee, APC nominee, CAN nominee, Village Head, Government representative (either civil or public servant from the village) and nominees of other political parties active in a certain polling unit.
“There will be no stop overs at local governments or ward levels to prevent the issues of stakeholders. Party officials, State, LGA Chairmen, Ward Councillors and all other political appointees from the units will act as monitoring teams”.
The Honourable Speaker who oversaw and supervised the construction and equipment of the treatment centre at Unity Square Abakaliki reacted to submissions of misinformed persons who had issues with Ebonyi State being a testing centre.
“It’s funny how some people quarrel as to why Ebonyi is a testing centre. it is not the Federal Government that equipped that Virology Centre. The Virology Centre was built and equipped by Ebonyi State Government and the machine that we’re using for testing is bought by Ebonyi State Government. This is because we have a Governor who cares for his people.
“We built the Virology Centre for Lassa Fever because we normally took our patients outside Ebonyi for treatment and some loose their lives on the way.
His Excellency said NO, that he couldn’t fold his hands and watch his people die carelessly, so he built it. It’s one of the best virology centres in the entire nation and that’s how we have machines for testing.
We didn’t stop there, it is only in Ebonyi that you see a State Government put up testing and treatment centres in the entire Federation, other states are being helped by FG and we’ve not received any money from FG in doing that.
We’re testing for other states from South South, South East and some parts of North Central.
“Our treatment centre at Unity square is fully equipped, both ventilators, gas concentrators, monitors are there and were bought by State Government without the help of the Federal Government.
We have 20 rooms there and there’s a fantastic isolation centre that is almost ready for Corona Virus and other infectious diseases. It is 90% completed and will be put to use from next week.
Mr. Speaker went on to note that the building of the treatment centre began even before the virus came into Nigeria.
“Immediately His Excellency heard of Corona Virus in China, he knew it would one day arrive Nigeria and he started preparing ahead of time. He’s such a proactive leader and only God knows why he’s our Governor at this time. He is God-Sent.
